Toolvetta

Base64 Encoder/Decoder

Base64 turns text into a string of letters, numbers, + and / that can travel safely through systems that only handle plain text. Choose Encode or Decode in Toolvetta’s converter and paste your input; Unicode is handled as UTF-8 and URL-safe Base64 decodes too.

Runs in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded.

How to decode and encode Base64

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste or type your text or Base64 string.
  3. Read the result in the output panel. Errors explain what is wrong.
  4. Copy the result.

Base64 Encoder/Decoder: frequently asked questions

How do I decode a Base64 string?

Switch to Decode and paste the string. The decoded text appears in the output panel straight away. Spaces and line breaks in the input are ignored, and missing “=” padding is added for you. If the result is JSON, tidy it with the JSON Formatter.

How do I encode text to Base64?

Choose Encode and type or paste your text. Each character is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so accented letters, Urdu, Arabic and emoji encode correctly.

Does it decode URL-safe Base64?

Yes. URL-safe Base64 uses - and _ instead of + and /, as in JWT tokens. The decoder accepts both alphabets automatically; for a JWT, paste only the part between two dots.

Why do I get an error when decoding Base64?

The string may contain characters that are not Base64, be cut off, or contain binary data such as an image or a ZIP file instead of text. This tool decodes text, so binary data shows a clear error.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption, and anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

Why is Base64 text longer than the original?

Every 3 bytes become 4 Base64 characters, so the encoded text is about 33% larger than the original.

What is the difference between Base64 and URL encoding?

Base64 rewrites all of the data using 64 safe characters. URL encoding changes only the characters that are unsafe in a web address, such as spaces, into codes like %20. For links and query strings, use the URL Encoder.
